Where innovation is tradition
Östergötland is a melting pot of technical expertise that few can match. World-class research and creative entrepreneurs come together to generate value, business opportunities, and breathtaking innovations. How about a digital autopsy of an authentic Egyptian mummy? Or the next generation of solar cells, printed on an ultra-thin layer of organic material? Groundbreaking innovations—made in Östergötland.
Innovation thrives in Östergötland’s two largest cities. Linköping has a strong tradition of collaboration between Linköping University, Linköping Science Park, a knowledge-intensive business sector, and the public sector. This synergy recently led Linköping to become the first Swedish city to win the EU Commission’s iCapital Awards, in the category European Rising Innovative City. Some of the region’s strongest research fields—attracting global attention—include advanced materials, IT, visualization, and imaging technology.
In Norrköping, experts in circular economy gather to witness industrial symbiosis in action. At Händelö Eco Industrial Park, industries work together by using each other’s residual waste as raw material. Norrköping is also home to world-class research in printed and organic electronics, as well as visualization. In recent years, Norrköping Science Park has been coordinating the Aero EDIH, a European Digital Innovation Hub leading the development of next-generation aviation and flight systems.
Around the region’s two science parks, global success stories are taking shape in one of Sweden’s most advanced ecosystems for research-based entrepreneurship. Here, talented entrepreneurs — ranging from promising startups to well-established companies — attract investments, forge collaborations, and create new ventures that appeal to international industry leaders.
Collaboration, openness, and bold thinking— the foundation of an innovation ecosystem that stands out and makes an impact.
