A flourishing high-tech sector

Some of Sweden’s largest industrial companies operate here, alongside a thriving ecosystem of innovative, young technology firms. The high-tech sector in Östergötland is flourishing, attracting both knowledge and capital to the region.
Linköping, for example, holds a unique position in Sweden’s aerospace and defense industry. It is the development and production hub for the JAS Gripen fighter jet, manufactured by defense company Saab. Saab is a world leader in the defense sector, with customers in over 100 countries and employees in 35. The company has also ventured into space. In January 2024, Saab’s chief test pilot, Marcus Wandt, became the third Swede in space when he launched from Kennedy Space Center to the International Space Station (ISS).
Major companies such as Saab, Siemens, Ericsson, Toyota Material Handling, and Väderstad are key drivers of the region’s economy. As hubs of innovation, development, and stability, they lead Östergötland’s industrial progress. Across the broader industry, the manufacturing and construction sectors employ the most people, followed by retail and the numerous small businesses offering corporate services. Logistics and transportation are also significant industries, closely linked to the region’s industrial landscape.
Östergötland enjoys a strong balance between different sectors—industry, public services, and commerce. This diversity makes the region resilient in times of change. While Linköping and Norrköping serve as the economic centers, smaller municipalities also boast thriving businesses, contributing to a robust and dynamic regional economy.
