Efficient pathways for development

Östergötland has one of Sweden’s best geographic locations, right between Stockholm and Gothenburg. From here, your deliveries can reach the majority of Scandinavia’s population within 24 hours. The Ostlänken, one of the largest infrastructure investments in modern times, is currently under construction here.

A perfect location for logistics

With a coastline along the Baltic Sea, Östergötland is Scandinavia’s logistics hub. Major transport routes converge here – on land, at sea, and in the air. It’s close to the Baltics and Finland, the Netherlands, Stockholm, and the rest of Sweden. Proximity that enables sustainability and provides the best conditions for the sustainable transport of the future. Together with large areas of land at reasonable plot prices and a skilled workforce, this lays the foundation for logistics-heavy businesses to establish here.

By land

The E4 motorway connects Östergötland with the rest of Sweden and Europe. It runs straight through the region and passes both Linköping and Norrköping – less than two hours from Stockholm. From the E4, it's also convenient to turn west toward Norway.

Around Norrköping, many distribution centers have been established, thanks to the excellent location with the connection between the E4, Norrköping Port, and the railway.

The Southern Main Line railway runs through Östergötland, and in a few years, so will the Ostlänken. Rail is a vital part of the future sustainable transport system and connects us to Stockholm, Jönköping, and Malmö. It offers excellent conditions for transporting both goods and people to most parts of Sweden and on to Europe.

By sea

Norrköping Port is a modern, full-service port. Every year, 4 million tons of goods are handled, and about 1,000 ships dock here. The port is in an expansive phase, with ongoing developments and improved connections. The construction of the new freight rail yard, which will accommodate trains up to 750 meters long, is planned to go into operation in March 2025.

The first stage of the future high-speed railway – the Kardon Line – was inaugurated a few years ago. Explore all the exciting development projects at the Norrköping Port website and the East Sweden Infra Cluster.

By air

Linköping City Airport, five minutes outside Linköping city center, is an international airport focusing on business travelers. From here, you can reach Amsterdam in under two hours, every day of the week.

Norrköping Airport is Sweden’s fourth-largest charter airport. In the summer, you can also fly domestically to Visby on the island of Gotland. In addition, the airport is served by freight flights.

Skills and research

Östergötland has a long history of expertise and development within logistics. Experience that is now being used to create the logistics of the future, with sustainability in focus. World-leading logistics companies like Toyota Material Handling Systems are based here, designing tomorrow’s automated logistics solutions for companies around the globe.

To increase competitiveness in the logistics sector and create a platform for collaboration and development, Logistikia was established. It’s a joint arena for logistics issues and logistics companies in the region, aiming to make Östergötland Sweden’s most attractive and sustainable logistics region.

Research and education in logistics strategies, supply chain management, healthcare logistics, construction logistics, and climate-smart transport attract students from all over the world. Linköping University conducts leading research in the field, and it’s no coincidence that Europe’s first professor in environmental logistics works here. The university, the business sector, Region Östergötland, and the municipalities together form a strong trinity that provides the best conditions for logistics operations in Östergötland – now and in the future.

In our part of the country...

• Nearly half a million people live here
• 45,000 companies operate here
• 80 percent of Sweden’s population is within a 400 km radius
• The Ostlänken – the next generation of high-speed railway – is being built and will pass through Östergötland with several stops along the way. Construction has begun on the first stage, the Kardon Line, a new connection to Norrköping Port. Don’t miss the growth opportunity of the century!
