Groundbreaking research in an open region

At Linköping University, renewal is a tradition. Here, researchers solve the questions of the future while also unraveling the mysteries of history—constantly breaking new ground.

Cross-disciplinary and world-leading

In close collaboration with business and society, Linköping University has quickly become a university with international impact. Courage, innovative thinking, and the ability to execute have created a platform for world-leading research in areas such as materials, IT, and hearing.

It was here that the world’s first digital hearing aid was developed. Today, the revolutionary digital hearing aid technology is standard worldwide. The university is also a global leader in medical imaging and visualization. When the British Museum sought to determine how the mummy “Gebelain Man” died thousands of years ago, it turned to Linköping University.

Time and again, the university’s approach to interdisciplinary research has proven to be an excellent method for tackling complex problems. For example, when the research team in organic electronics managed to get rose petals to change color by integrating electronics into the plant. This breakthrough opened up an entirely new field of research that might one day enable us to harness photosynthesis to generate energy.

Materials research at Linköping University is of the highest caliber, both nationally and internationally. In fact, researchers at Linköping University solved the material shortage for the super microscope ESS, which is currently being built in Lund. During the multibillion project, a shortage of the essential noble gas helium-3 was discovered. ESS turned to the thin-film researchers at Linköping University, who managed to find a way to replace the helium gas with ultra-thin layers of boron carbide.

For decades, Linköping University has worked across disciplines and in close collaboration with industry. This has generated successful research environments and groundbreaking discoveries. And many more are yet to come.
